Virtuoso Piano Free 3, This free app is a great starting point to learn the piano. O ffering a rich sound comprising of 88 keys sampled from real pianos, AirPlay support and the option to play along with your music library.
SoundHound, Just like Shazam, SoundHound can quickly recognise tunes playing through your speakers and identify the track in as little as four seconds – making it the ideal tool to sneak into pub quizzes. A wealth of extra features make this free app an absolute must-have.
GuitarToolkit, This app o ffers a wide selection of tools for guitar players, including an accurate tuner, a precision metronome and a huge library of chords, scales and arpeggios. It also caters for 6, 7 and 12-string guitars, basses, banjos, mandolins and pretty much any other stringed instrument.
GarageBand, Apple’s own music app is a masterstroke of innovation and simplicity. You can begin playing each of the ‘smart’ instruments e ffortlessly, lay down some tracks and piece together your own compositions with little or no prior musical knowledge at all. Amazing.
Spotify, This is the ultimate ‘try before you buy‘ music service. Search for songs and artists and play what you want – absolutely free. Unless you are a subscriber then you’ll have to endure advert interludes but that seems a small price to pay for the service this provides.
AmpliTube, Used in conjunction with the iRig interface adaptor, AmpliTube allows you to transform your iPhone into a feature-heavy electric guitar amp by just plugging in your guitar and utilising a host of pedal e ffects. This is really brilliant if you cannot a fford a Marshall ampli fier.
Shazam Encore, If you have ever had trouble remembering the names of certain songs or the artists that performed them then Shazam is just the app for you. Shazam cleverly uses your iPhone’s built-in microphone to gather a brief sample of music being played. An acoustic fingerprint is created based on the sample, and is compared against a central database for a match. If a match is found, information such as the artist, song title, and lyrics are relayed back to the user. Watching the app in action is awe-inspiring and it identi fies even the most seemingly obscure of tracks within a click of the fingers. Very impressive and a de nite must!
